How to find a profitable niche – that is the question!

Research is crucial in finding a profitable niche for your Special Interest or Non-Fiction video as well as in marketing it. One of the best free research tools I’ve found is Google Alerts.

Google Alerts: How to use it for researching niches or topics

Google Alerts will search for you. Once you sign up, you will choose a query or topic. Then you will receive “alerts” via email updates of the latest relevant Google results (websites, news, etc.) based on your choice.

Although you can use Google Alerts to do many types of research such as monitoring a developing news story, keeping current on a competitor or industry, getting notified if and when others are talking about you or your product, and keeping tabs on your name and reputation, it can also be used to find information on areas where many people have an interest, problems or questions.

Find A Profitable Special Interest Video Niche

Once you’re ready to go in Google Alerts, just enter in the topics (you can sign up for as many search terms as you wish) you’ve been considering producing a video on and schedule how often you want to be notified. That can be weekly, daily or as the news is breaking. You can do a comprehensive search or you can narrow it further and only be alerted from specific blogs, web, video or groups. You will soon get a good sense of what information is out there already on the topic and if you can add something new to the niche.

For example, you may be interested in doing a cooking video series on vegan desserts. You sign up to be alerted to the words “vegan desserts” and see there are a lot of people talking about it. Then you can click on the website links provided to get a better sense of the buzz around the topic and what type of information is already out there.

You may also discover that there is not much activity around that query. That gives you good information as well. Maybe this topic or niche is not as hot of an area you thought it would be and now you can decide if your time and effort producing a video would be better spent in another way.

You may also find very similar videos or products such as yours being offered. Again, this gives you a good indication of the type of competition you face. If you are still excited about this topic, then you need to position yourself differently and decide what unique angle you are bringing to the marketplace.
